Maude Kerns (1876-1965) watercolor abstract on paper. Circa 1950’s. Maude was an important figure in modernism in the Northwest and one of the earliest adopters and instructors of the movement. She studied under notable artists Hans Hofmann, Rolph Scarlett, and Alexander Archipenko. She also showed regularly at the Museum of non-Objective Art (renamed to the Guggenheim Museum) with artists Moholy-Nagy, Ilya Bolotowsky, Alice Trumbell-Mason, and Josef Albers. She taught at the University of Oregon from 1931 to 1947.
